Blinco, David E.

BLINCO, David E.

1931 - 2021

It is with profound sadness that the family of David Everett Blinco (Coach Blinco) announce his passing in Quebec on Wednesday, February 17 in his 90th year.

Husband of Marion Ellen Coleman and father to Christopher (Ruth), Kimberley (Valarie), and Troy (Susan).  Dave was also so very proud of his four grandchildren Jason (predeceased), Jessica (Robert), Joshua, and Matthew.  They loved their Grampy so very dearly.  He will be missed by many dear nieces, nephews, cousins and countless friends, and former students.

Dave graduated from Springfield College with a Bachelor of Science in Physical Education in 1953.  He began his teaching career at St. George’s Elementary.  Dave then moved on to Quebec High School and taught Physical Education & Health Sciences, spending countless hours devoted to coaching. Dave and Marion met early in his career and were married at the Holy Trinity Anglican Cathedral in 1956. They were devoted to each other and raised their family, together for 64 happy years. Dave was an active member of Trinity Church, Sainte Foy and countless community organizations.

Dave so enjoyed coaching, fly fishing, golf, curling, bowling and travelling.  He loved people and would stop to chat with anyone.

Due to Covid, there will be a private family funeral at Trinity Church in Quebec. When Covid rules relax, a Celebration of Dave’s life will be held at a later date.

The family would like to extend their sincere gratitude to staff at Maison Michel Sarrazin, and Homecare staff of Jeffery Hale Community Services particularly Louise, Kathleen, and Rosanne. Special thanks to the staff at Chartwell Appartements de Bordeaux, your professional and compassionate care of Dave was exceptional. Thank you all.

In lieu of flowers, the family suggests a donation to Quebec High School Alumni Association or Maison Michel Sarrazin.

My sincere condolences to Marion and your family.
“Coach” Blinco was not only the best coach I ever had but a great mentor. I fondly remember the football, track & field and hockey teams that Dave coached. He was a very special person in my life. He helped me to become a better person.

We were sorry to learn of Mr. Blinco's passing. He was such a fun and kind man and my parents always enjoyed the company of both of you. Your kindness in visiting them at The Wales Home in Richmond, several years ago, and celebrating other happy occasions with them, travelling to Ontario as well, was in keeping with of your characters. Steve and I send heartfelt sympathy to you all. Sincerely, Steve and Bonnie (Lovett) Griffin

David's Family

Heartfelt condolences to all of you. Dave was a wonderful man with a very strong sense of fellowship and willingness to support our community taking leadership roles in church, school, and lodge. He had a particularly dry sense of humour and always willing to banter with a gleam in his eyes. David was a man of faith who lived his life on a solid moral foundation, one that placed you, his family, and our Quebec English community at the centre of his world. He will be dearly missed!

Troy and family - Our sincerest condolences to the entire family. Your dad was one of the first people my dad met back in 1987 on my first day at U of Waterloo. The two hit it off and they thought it would be great to introduce their sons. Turns out that was a great idea and a long-time cherished friendship. Both Sandra and I are honored to have known him.

« Mr. » Blinco was everyone’s gym teacher; I have a memory of having to wrestle against his son Troy; no idea who won! Dave was very kind to my Dad as Dad taught the fun woodworking course as part of the adult Ed courses offered at QHS. I saw Dave and Marion at every church event that I ever attended; he always took the time to talk to me (and everyone else!) My deepest sympathies, and with gratitude for having known him.

My heartfelt condolences to you, Marion, and your family. Always enjoyed Dave's phone calls, visits and interest in our Mazes over the years. He was such an active person and leader in the community. His cheerfulness and optimism were infectious. Hard to believe he is gone.

Marion and family

Marc-André, Lianne and I send you our most sincere condolences, Marion and family. From their youngest days, the kids enjoyed stopping by to see Dave on their way to their grandparents, with him following their sports activities. Then he and I shared many a good discussion on CBC Radio, and we met you both at Trinity teas, Christmas Hamper deliveries and many other moments. We will miss his laughter and his genuine interest in our family's activities. We will miss him, but we are grateful for his passage in our lives. With love,

My sincere condolences to Marion and the Blinco Family. Dave Blinco brings back happy memories of my time at Quebec High School in the 1950's. He was so understanding of my bad leg as a polio victim during gym time.

The coach was one of those dynamic people you felt would always be there. Now he will remain in our hearts and minds. Marion and Dave were the two people I always looked for when I was at a reunion or event in Quebec City. They confirmed my memories of the past and the possibilities in the future. The Coach encouraged me in my athletic challenges in High School and, for that, I will always be grateful. He truly was everyone's coach!

To the Blinco family!

You have been blessed to have Coach Blinco in your lives. I remember him from my high school days where he was a highly regarded teacher and coach. I also remembered babysitting for the kids and he always made sure I got safely home. I also went to Trinity church. All this of course in the late 1960s.

My sympathies to all of you and may his memories warm your hearts always. Rest in peace, Dave Blinco.

Coach Dave taught us more about being a member of a team than the sport itself, and that is how it should be. I played footbal, hockey and ran track during my years at QHS and Dave was the rock we depended on to learn about what sports was really about. He will be long remembered and sorely missed. Our condolences to you, Marion and your family, and to the greater QHS fmaily.

As a mentor, he taught me the importance of integrity, perseverance, a sense of humour and a smile on your face.

It has been many years have not touched base. Check your FB account. Sent message. Your dad influenced a lot of us in many ways. The Blinco Family

It was with sadness that I learned recently of Coach Dave Blinco's passing. My sincere condolences go to all of the Blinco family members.
Coach Blinco certainly was a remarkable man, who was my QHS football coach from 1964 thru to 1967. I can't believe that it was a half-century ago.
Mr. Blinco (as we all referred to him in High School) was always honest and sincere, very straightforward as our coach who encouraged and inspired us to perform to the best of our abilities. Qualities of life we all cherished and brought with us for the rest of our lives
I always looked forward to his gym class, where he would lead us all in our usual class commencement warm-up exercise, and he would pull one or two of us out of the class to lead with him in the middle of the gym floor. During the work-out Mr. Blinco would provide us with an awareness of current school events, personal congratulations and encouragement always spiced with some light-hearted humour. It was always a fun time and our best moment of the day.

I continue to have very fond memories of those days, and smile and think of Coach Blinco while sometimes leading our site staff in early morning post toolbox/safety meetings warm-up exercises, whenever I have an opportunity to visit our construction sites. I provide the same exercise routine Mr. Blinco taught us, as I am sure he continues to observe and hopefully with his approval.

My deepest sympathies to Mrs. Blinco and the entire family. I fondly remember Dave as a generous man who gave to his community and was always glad to see you with a smile and hearty handshake.

Dave and my father, Douglas Robinson (from Thetford Mines), would take off each spring on a fishing trip with other Masons. My father and Dave were also great cribbage players and enjoyed many a game on those outings.

May you find comfort in your memories and of the stories fondly shared by friends and colleagues.
